| Audi R8: The Ultimate Driving Machine? August 22, 2009 at 8:57 pm |
| Filed under: Etc., Humor, Russia Oligarchical Russian BMW R8 - click above image for high-res gallery In the pantheon of automotive wrongs, the Slavic hoser behind this "BMW R8" spotted in Moscow is a god. Hang around this car blogging business long enough and you see a lot of terrible things at SEMA. But this thing is almost cake-taking. Some of y'all might remember the Bentley badged up as Hyundai from a couple years back -- but that was at least funny. This Audi/BMW is just... weird. For instance, if the guy's being serious, like, why not just buy an M6? They basically cost the exact the same amount. And also, isn't the Audi R8 somewhat more desirable? We're really at a loss as too why anyone would do this. Your thoughts? And a very special thanks to Justin for bringing this... thing to our attention. Shudder.

| Ural introduces Patrol T and Red October sidecar motorcycles August 22, 2009 at 6:55 pm |
| Filed under: Motorcycle Ural Patrol T and Red October - Click above for high-res image gallery We had more than our fair share of fun bombing around the streets of Seattle and the surrounding area on the brand new Ural T sidecar motorcycle. Though it's surely not for everybody, we found ourselves smitten with the machine's no-nonsense old-world charm and throwback style. The one thing that was missing, though, was Ural's two-wheel drive option. We're happy to report that this omission has now been rectified with the new Ural Patrol T (pictured above). Not only is the model's $12,399 asking price a full six Benjamins under that of the standard Patrol, it's also painted up in our preferred Olive drab and has matte black trim in place of the normal chrome. That's a whole bucket full of win right there. Also new from Ural is the 2009 Red October Limited Edition sidecar. With its single-wheel drive, 18-inch wheels and 3.89 final drive ratio, the Red October promises to be a good bit faster on the top end than the rest of Ural's line. Thanks to the lower seating position via a sidecar frame shared with the Retro model, it should be a highly passenger-friendly outfit. We also dig the contrast of its deep red bodywork against the flat black trim and powertrain. For more official shots of Ural's two new bikes, check out the high-res gallery below. | VIDEO: Car and Driver creates the mother (in law) of all driving schools August 22, 2009 at 4:53 pm |
| Filed under: Motorsports, Etc., Videos, Humor We could've sworn we heard this idea from Lieberman first. No matter, Car & Driver saw the potential hilarity in the concept of teaching grandmothers the finer points of late-braking and lateral g-forces, too. Mothers-in-law of the buff book's writing squad were recruited for some lapping in MINI Clubmans, and hopefully the amateur pilots walked away with a deeper understanding of just what it is their sons-in-law do. CD associate editor Tony Quiroga supplies the voiceover, and the video is probably not the most exciting thing you'll watch today, but you can see for yourself how the events unfolded after the jump. | Stig and the boys immortalized in bricks as Top Gear makes it to Legoland August 22, 2009 at 2:49 pm |
| Filed under: Toys/Games, UK, Celebrities The Top Gear crew rendered in LEGO - High-res version available at flickr
Another Saturday, another LEGO car story. This time, the little Swedish bricks have been used to immortalize the presenters from our favorite automotive television show, Top Gear. In honor of the show naming the Caterham Superlight R500 its Car of the Year, the UK's Legoland built a miniature version of the car, along with the whole cast. Taking their place in the park's MINILAND exhibit in Windsor are none other than Jezza, Hamster, Captain Slow and The Stig (clockwise from bottom in the above photo).

| Michigan Humane Society pitching adoptions like CPO cars August 22, 2009 at 12:50 pm |
| Filed under: Etc., Humor It's a program that works well with cars, so why not try it out on the cats? That's the logic of the Michigan Humane Society as it rolls out the innovative "Certified Pre-Owned Cats" program in an effort to rid itself of thousands of unadopted felines languishing in local shelters.
Offering incentives such as $0 down, $0 financing, and no payments (ever!), the program only applies to cats 4 months or older (kittens are apparently an easy emotional sale). The humane society suggests getting the prospective animal's FIN (Feline Identification Number) and request a CATFAX report before signing documents, even though the animals have passed thorough medical inspections.
While gimmicky, the program apparently works and few cats are being returned (no word on the availability of an extended warranty). The shelters have even found that with careful screening, the cost of the adoption doesn't affect the quality of the homes they find. Here's a suggestion for next month's program: "Cats for Clunkers."

| GM Brazil unveils the Chevy Agile, thankfully, it's not the new Aveo! August 22, 2009 at 10:55 am |
| Filed under: Hatchback, Chevrolet, South America
General Motors Brazil has just released the first official image of its new Agile small car. Thankfully, contrary to earlier speculation, the somewhat awkward-looking car that you see here will not be GM's new B-segment model for North America (oft referred to as Viva). The North American model will actually retain the Aveo name when it debuts next year and wear styling that emulates the even smaller Chevy Spark in some respects, only stretched over a longer platform. We saw the next-generation Aveo last week and while it doesn't quite have the style of the competing Ford Fiesta, from where we sit, it's a huge improvement over either the current Aveo or the Agile shown here.
We don't know many details of either the Aveo or the Agile yet, so it's possible that they'll share some underpinnings. Judging by the way the Agile sits on its wheels, it looks like it is designed for less-developed markets where road quality might not be up to most US or European standards and more wheel travel is required. The Google translated press release is after the jump.
