| Hyundai prices 35 mpg Elantra Blue from $14,145* September 21, 2009 at 8:58 am |
| Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Hyundai 2010 Hyundai Elantra Blue - Click above for a high-res image gallery The 2010 Hyundai Elanta comes in a trim called "Blue" that's all about fuel economy. The little sedan from the Flying H matches or beats the economy numbers from almost all of the competition, losing by just two mpg to the Cobalt XFE manual - but beating them all in price by a couple hundred dollars. To reach its 35 mpg figure, the Blue gets a smart alternator, lower friction engine parts, different gear ratios, an ECU tweak, and a shift indicator. The rest of the line gets some of the Blue's features, meaning that every new 2010 Elantra ought to save you some money at the pump. The Blue clocks in at $14,145 (*plus $720 for freight), and you can read all about it and the other models in the 2010 line after the jump. [Source: Hyundai]

| Filed under: Coupe, Videos, Volkswagen Volkswagen Golf R20 and Scirocco R track-side -- Click above to watch video In another astronaut-ish commercial, VW has thrown two test drivers in a G-force simulator and on the track in two of its blistering blue R-line cars: the Scirocco R and the Golf R20. It's like the Ferrari video, but with less yellow and red... and less money. We're not quite sure what's happening with the G-Force segments, but we'd like to be driving those track portions ourselves. Follow the jump to check out the video. Hat tip to Mehdi [Source: YouTube]

| REPORT: Nissan GT-R class action suit over transmission failures settled September 20, 2009 at 7:03 pm |
| Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Recalls, Nissan It was nearly a year ago when we reported on a NAGTROC forum user getting hit with a $20,000 bill to replace his toasted transmission after using Launch Control (LC1) on his GT-R. In time for the second model year of the car, Nissan first dropped Launch Control, then they decided to include it, but with safeguards (LC2). In the meantime, a growing number of owners of the initial batch got together and filed a class action suit against Nissan in the hopes of receiving some compensation for their transmissions. That suit was settled last weekend in California. The verdict: any owners with LC1 will have their warranties reset for 5 years/60,000 miles once they upgrade to LC2, and the LC2 transmission and internals -- including VDC -- will be fully covered by Nissan. If you use the LC2 with VDC on and something breaks, everything's covered. If you turn the VDC off and use LC2 and something breaks, you're in the poo. However, if you turn the VDC off and use LC2, then turn VDC back on and everything is fine, then you drive for a while and then a few weeks later something breaks, Nissan will have to prove that turning the VDC off weeks earlier is what caused the breakage. Previously the burden of proof was on the owner; now it's on Nissan. Owners of 2009 cars will also get a $75 coupon for service at a GT-R-approved dealership. Owners will receive notices in the mail with the details. Whew. Glad that's over. Now can we get back to enjoying one of the finest cars on the roads today? Hat tip to Matt [Source: NAGTROC]

| Ironic Study: Not owning a car can make you fatter. Sorta. September 20, 2009 at 5:25 pm |
| Filed under: Etc. Can not owning a car make you fatter? Iteems conventional wisdom would have it that people who don't own cars might tend to get more exercise having to walk everywhere they go, no? No. Well not completely, at least according to a new study that appears in the September issue of the Journal of Urban Health. While the study doesn't imply that walking isn't good exercise, it does take a closer look at where those people without cars are walking to. And if you happen to live in a poorer neighborhood, you're probably walking to a fast food restaurant, which is bad. It's not a novel idea to think that you might be heavier if you live in an area with a lot of fast food options, but this study also takes into account that people with cars might be able to drive to find healthier dining options. And they were right. After studying 2,156 adults from the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Study database, the researchers found that car owners weighed about 8.5 pounds more than those who didn't own cars on average. That makes sense, but they also found that in neighborhoods with lots of fast food joints, non-car owners whose data they reviewed weighed 12 pounds more than car-less folks in areas without fast food restaurants, and 2.7 pounds more than their neighbors who owned cars. The dichotomy is that the skinniest people proved to be those who didn't have cars, but lived in areas with fewer fast-food restaurants. Which, as one might suspect, tends to be upscale neighborhoods. So if you live in an area with a lot of Mickey D's and KFC's, you might want to get yourself some wheels. | Volkswagen looking to take stake in Suzuki by year's end? September 20, 2009 at 12:35 pm |
| Filed under: Suzuki, Volkswagen, Earnings/Financials, Rumormill The rumors keep coming. Just last month, we reported that Volkswagen AG was interested in a small slice of Suzuki Motors. Now, the German industry publication Automobilwoche is reiterating the same news. Apparently, a Suzuki executive at the Frankfurt Motor Show mentioned that an agreement between the two automakers would be in place by the end of the year. "For Suzuki and VW this connection would be a win-win situation. Suzuki would have access to a variety of VW's technology, while Volkswagen would have a solid supporting leg in India and Southeast Asia," the unnamed source said. Neither party has any official word on the matter. However, last Monday Martin Winterkorn, VW's Chief Executive, said the product portfolio of the Japanese automaker would fit well with his company. Thanks for the tip, James! [Source: Reuters]

| VIDEO: Drew Barrymore takes Jay Leno's Green Car Challenge September 20, 2009 at 11:11 am |
| Filed under: Videos, Hatchback, Ford, Celebrities, Alternative Fuel Drew Barrymore takes the wheel in Jay Leno's Green Car Challenge - Click above to watch the video Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that NBC, apparently incapable of producing compelling scripted television not named The Office or 30 Rock, has nuked its entire 10 PM primetime lineup (and effectively thrown Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show under the bus) on the gamble that Jay Leno can carry that hour every weeknight. The Jay Leno Show indeed debuted to boffo numbers on Monday (18 million viewers), and went on to win the 10 PM timeslot for NBC every other night as well. (The real competition starts this week, as the other nets roll out their new Fall schedules.) On Friday, 7.7 million viewers witnessed the first edition of the much-hyped Green Car Challenge segment, a regular feature of the Leno show that will put a celebrity guest behind the wheel of an electric Ford Focus ST to see how quickly he or she can run two laps of the circuit painted on the backlot behind Leno's soundstage. First up was Drew Barrymore, who explained to Jay that she was currently without a driver's license as she clicked into the racing harness in the driver's seat. The segment goes like this: lap one is unobstructed -- the celeb simply tries to get around the course as quickly as possible in the electric Ford Political Correctness Capsule. Lap 2 adds a healthy dose of lameness, with dangling cardboard cutouts of Al Gore and Ed Begley Jr. that try to impede the driver's progress. These are to be avoided if the celebrity doesn't want to take a 1-second penalty for each strike. (We're hoping someone aims right for the stupid things in a future segment.) In addition to tree-hugger avoidance maneuvers, the second lap also features cannons that shoot ping-pong balls and party streamers at the car. It's about as dopey as it sounds, and despite all the hoopla (NBC has the Goodyear Blimp capturing the overhead shots, for crying out loud) it just comes off as a cheap imitation of Top Gear's "Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car", which, of course, it is. Watch and judge for yourselves after the jump, where the segment is embedded in a Hulu player. [Source: Hulu]
