| VIDEO: Gymkhana 2.1 - Electric Boogaloo: Block vs. Dyrdeks September 4, 2009 at 9:00 pm |
| Filed under: Motorsports, Performance, Etc., Marketing/Advertising, Hatchback, Subaru, Humor, Specialty Gymkhana 2.1 - Block vs. Dyrdek - Click above to watch the video after the jump Driftmeister Extraordinaire Ken Block is at it again, only this time, with a bit more of a sense of humor on display. The tire-immolating Subaru WRX STI rally driver has teamed up with pro skateboarder Rob Dyrdek for a "Me and My Shadow" video extravaganza dubbed Gymkhana 2.1. While we have to admit that the finished product isn't filled with as many jaw-slackeningly awesome moments as the pair of videos that proceeded it, it's an amusing coquet while we wait for Gymkhana 3.0, a film that will presumably involve a borrowed space shuttle, a runway full of banana peels, and at least one octogenarian goat herder. The 3:49 production is worth watching just for Dyrdek's custom "Mini Me" go-kart, which we want parked in our lawnmower shed yesterday. Enjoy watching the video after the jump, and be sure to check out the slightly less-than high-res images in the gallery below. Hat tips to Adam and Christian! | VIDEO: Reborn Trans Am makes fire-breathing entrance in Dayton September 4, 2009 at 8:29 pm |
| Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Chevrolet, Pontiac Kevin Morgan Pontiac Trans Am - Click above to watch the video after the break Few Pontiac models will be missed by as many people as the Trans Am. From its humble origins in 1969 as an option package on the two-year-old Firebird platform through the Super Duty days and the Bandit Special Editions, right on up to the final Ram Air LS1-powered F-Bodies from 2002, Pontiac's longest-lived muscle car has always enjoyed a loyal following. So dedicated are these Poncho fanatics that the Trans Am name seems destined to live on past the death of the brand that originally spawned it. We've taken a look at Kevin Morgan's Phoenix TA revival once already, and now the first such Camaro-based machine has been driven off the car carrier in front of a few hundred screaming chickens fans at last weekend's 25th Anniversary Trans Am Nationals in Dayton, Ohio. Perhaps fittingly, this initial 'bird was painted up in a classic black and gold paint scheme complete with a fire-breathing hood applique and a split front beak reminiscent of the 1977 and 1978 Trans Ams. Naturally, there's a shaker scoop mounted atop the quivering hood feeding fresh air into what we assume is a stock LS3 6.2-liter V8 putting out 426 horsepower. The only things that are missing are T-Tops and a CB radio. Well, that, and a young Sally Field. Click past the break to watch the video. | GM exercises self-love, plans to re-name Canada's Buick Allure LaCrosse after all September 4, 2009 at 7:59 pm |
| Filed under: Sedan, Marketing/Advertising, Buick, Canada 2010 Buick LaCrosse: Click above for high-res image gallery When General Motors named the Chevrolet Nova, the majority of customers in America had no issues whatsoever with the spacey moniker. Spanish speaking countries were a different matter entirely, as the literal Spanish translation of "no va" is "no go." As the story goes, Chevy's Nova was less than successful south of Texas, although some analysts (armchair and otherwise) dismiss this historical naming issue as nonsense. Whether the Nova was an issue for GM or not, the automaker wasn't looking to tempt fate when the Buick LaCrosse began production in 2005. The French translation of "LaCrosse" is something along the lines of "self love" - not a flattering name for a family sedan. This being the case, the LaCrosse was renamed Allure in Canada and Buick buyers north of the border were free of ridicule and humiliation. After careful consideration, GM has decided to ditch the Allure nameplate and instead leave the LaCrosse badging on the sedan's boot for the new 2010 model. GM Canada spokesman George Saratlic told the National Post that the decision was made to help streamline marketing costs. The feeling at GM is that Québécoise accept the name lacrosse in reference to the popular sport, so the benefits of having a consistent naming convention across North America far outweighs the negative stigma of the name. Saratlic adds, "We do think that this will help customers learn more about the new Buick LaCrosse sedan thanks to the strengthened advertising push this will enable and that the car will have distinctly upscale characteristics that clearly define what it stands for in the market." Since we've poured precisely zero dollars into investigating the impact of the LaCrosse name in Canada, we'll take the company at its word. We would, however, suggest that Canadian LaCrosse drivers keep both hands on the wheel, at least for now. | Spy Shots: Ford Fiesta sedan spotted in Mexico with plug, but it's not an EV! September 4, 2009 at 7:29 pm |
| Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Ford, Alternative Fuel With the new North American market Ford Fiesta set to launch production in Mexico in just a few months, it's no surprise that someone has spotted one running around near Mexico City. In this case, the car that was seen is the sedan version that is likely to comprise the majority of U.S. sales. Automovil, which got a hold of these pics and saw an electric cord sticking out of the lower grille, is speculating that this is an electrified version of the Fiesta, going so far as to claim that it was operating silently. On this point, however, Ford has never given any indication that it is working on an electric Fiesta - its upcoming electric passenger car is based on the new Focus platform. We checked with Ford spokespeople Alan Hall and Jennifer Moore (who specifically work on sustainability communications) and both told us that there is no work ongoing on an electric Fiesta. Since the plug appears to be a standard 110V three prong unit, this is almost certainly just a block heater. While a heater wouldn't be needed in the sunny summer locale in Mexico, this prototype has likely seen service in cold weather regions at other times.
As for the reported silence, Ford has said almost all of its cars will have automatic start-stop capability within the next few years and the Fiesta is expected to be one of the first so equipped. Thanks to Francisco for the tip! [Source: Automovil]Spy Shots: Ford Fiesta sedan spotted in Mexico with plug, but it's not an EV! originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Sep 2009 18:29:00 EST. | Ford of Canada partners with Clean Air Foundation to give C4C-like incentives September 4, 2009 at 6:58 pm |
| Filed under: Government/Legal, Ford, Canada 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid - Click above for high-res image gallery Cash for Clunkers helped all automakers move some metal during the month of August and now Ford is looking to capture lightning in a bottle up in the Great White North. Ford of Canada is working with the Clean Air Foundation to provide incentives of up to $3,000 for vehicles 15 years or older. Three hundred of those dollars would come from the Canadian government as part of its Retire Your Ride program. The plan sounds good based solely on its ability to save customers up to $3,000 per clunker, but info from NRCan's Fuel Consumption Guide for Canada shows that the program will also save you big at the pump. Replace the typical sedan from 1995 with a 2010 Ford Fusion 2.5L and save $325 per year in fuel prices.Things look even better if you're driving an SUV from and you trade it in for a FWD 2010 Ford Escape 2.5L as you can shed $975 per year at the pump. The move is also good for the environment, as the Clean Air Foundation states that the average vehicle from 1995 emits 19 times more pollutants than a comparably sized 2004 model. Here is how the incentives break down. The government's Retire Your Ride program offers $300, transit passes, discounts on bicycles and more to the owners of 1995 model year vehicles or older who turn in a clunker. The Blue Oval will pitch in $1,000 towards the purchase of a Ford car, $2,000 towards a crossover or SUV or $3,000 towards a Ford truck or Lincoln vehicle. Hit the jump to pour over the press release, and if you're a Canadian interested in the program, rules and regulations are at the bottom.

| FIA digging for dirt in Renault F1 investigation September 4, 2009 at 6:30 pm |
| Filed under: Motorsports, Government/Legal, Renault Nelsinho Piquet at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix The FIA is always sticking its nose around, sniffing around for some trouble. So, when the motorsport governing body opened a new investigation into the Renault F1 team, frankly we weren't all that surprised or interested. The probe centered around claims that the team instructed its since-departed driver Nelson Piquet, Jr. to crash on purpose at the Singapore Grand Prix last year in order to help his wing-man Fernando Alonso win the race. Now, however, the probe appears to be deepening as the FIA claims to have discovered "other issues above and beyond Singapore" during their investigation into Renault's alleged wrongdoing. In a recurrence of the "Stepney-gate" investigations held during his brief but highly controversial tenure at McLaren, Alonso was reportedly questioned at length by the FIA's lawyers, along with technical chief Pat Symonds and team principal Flavio Briatore, to name just a few of the most prominent team figures implicated. The team is naturally denying any wrongdoing, and tellingly, several individuals who've since left the team, including former engine chief Denis Chevrier and former test driver Franck Montagny, have expressed serious doubt that Renault was up to any underhanded business. For our part, we have a feeling this isn't the last we've heard over what we'll tentatively refer to as "Renault-gate." [Source: F1-Live]

| Gordon Murray Design reveals modular seating of T.25 September 4, 2009 at 5:59 pm |
| Filed under: Coupe, Budget, Hatchback Gordon Murray's iCentre - Click above to enlarge Gordon Murray hopes his developing T.25 minicar will offer something unique to attract buyers away from cars like the Smart Fortwo and Toyota iQ. To that end, the diminutive machine will seat three occupants with the driver front-and-center behind a mid-mounted steering wheel in an arrangement Murray calls iCentre. Out back, two seats flank that single drivers perch, which puts the T.25 directly between the two-seat Smart Fortwo and four-seat (or, 3+1 as Toyota puts it) iQ. This is a similar arrangement to that of the iconic McLaren F1 that Murray also designed, and that's good company to be in. There will be six different seating and cargo arrangements to choose from that can be configured in under 30 seconds. Despite seating one additional passenger than the Smart, the T.25 will reportedly offer more total interior volume - up to 750 liters in "Shopping Mode" without the rear passengers - and luggage carrying capacity than its main competitor. To access the vehicle, there will reportedly be two doors, one in the traditional hatchback location and another echoing the old BMW Isetta by opening on a hinge at the very front of the car. There's no guarantee that Murray's innovative T.25 microcar will ever see the light of day. The designer has no intention of actually building the automobile himself - instead, Murray hopes to sell the rights to build the car using his equally impressive (or so we hear) iStream production method to a number of third-party assemblers, possibly even brands like Apple, Virgin or Sony. Click past the break for an official press release.Continue reading Gordon Murray Design reveals modular seating of T.25 Gordon Murray Design reveals modular seating of T.25 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Sep 2009 16:59:00 EST. | Leaked: MINI gets larger sticker for 2010 September 4, 2009 at 5:29 pm |
| Filed under: Car Buying, Convertible, Hatchback, MINI 2009 Mini Cooper S Convertible - Click above for high-res image gallery The fine folks over at MotoringFile say that the pricing on their favorite little cars will grow in 2010. A combination of higher shipping costs and more standard equipment (including runflat tires), results in a base price bump of $300 to $400 on every MINI model across the board. The cheapest MINI, the R56 Cooper, now starts at $19,500 - $300 more than the '09 model. On the other end of the range, the R57 John Cooper Works MINI convertible also gets a $300 bump and starts at $34,700 before options. In between lies the R55 Clubman series, which carries a matching $300 bump to $21,150 to start and maxes out in JCW guise at $31,700. MotoringFile has a list of other changes you'll see when ordering our new MINI, including Interchange Yellow replacing Mellow Yellow, fabric on the back of sport seats and some exterior colors available only with certain packages. The memos also make even more official BMW's decision to completely drop the limited slip differential option due to low interest. | Buick's new compact sedan spotted in China September 4, 2009 at 5:00 pm |
| Filed under: Spy Photos, Buick One of the two new sedans that Buick has promised to introduce in the next 12-18 months is a compact based on the new Opel Astra. We had a chance to see the new car a few weeks ago at the GM design studios in Warren, Michigan, but no photography was allowed. That same car has now been spotted in the wild in China where it seems likely to be very popular. It won't look anything like the current almost unsellable Astra available from Saturn and will likely only be sold in North America as a four-door sedan. So far, the Astra itself has only been shown as a five-door hatch although that may change when it is publicly displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month. At this time, there is no word on what powertrains will go into the North American Buick, but four cylinder engines displacing between 1.6 and 2.0 liters are likely. The 1.4-liter turbo that will go into the Cruze is also a possibility. GM has said that a C-segment car like this could be built at its Lake Orion, MI assembly plant alongside the new Aveo, though it could also be built in Detroit with the Volt or in Lordstown, Ohio with the Cruze. | Kia prices 2010 Forte Koup at $16,595* September 4, 2009 at 4:31 pm |
| Filed under: Car Buying, Coupe, Budget, Kia 2010 Kia Forte Koup - Click above for high-res image gallery Back in July, Kia announced that its two-door Forte would begin hitting dealerships across the United States later this summer. Well, that time is now, and the Korean automaker has just announced pricing on its fashionable coupe Koup. Pricing for the 2010 Forte Koupe will begin at $16,595, to which you can immediately add $695 for destination. For those paying attention, that's puts the Koup a not-insignificant $2,900 over the base cost of the Forte sedan, which we found to be a credible entry into the popular compact car segment currently dominated by the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. Add another grand if you'd like an automatic transmission (with just four forward ratios on the EX, sadly). Stepping up to the SX model will cost you $17,695 to start with a manual transmission or $18,695 with a five-speed auto (plus destination) and will put a 173-hp 2.4 liter four cylinder underhood. A leather interior will add $1,000 to any trim level and a sunroof goes for $600. Click here to build your own - we added every option to our Koup and came up with an asking price of $21,505, which runs right in line with the car's intended competition. | REPORT: Ford's Mark Fields implies company makes no money on hybrids September 4, 2009 at 4:00 pm |
| Filed under: Hybrid, Ford, Earnings/Financials, Alternative Fuel, Diesel 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid - Click above for high-res image gallery
Last week, our friends from Consumer Reports got the chance to sit down with Mark Fields, Ford's vice president of North American operations, and some interesting information was gleaned. For instance, CR says Fields "implied the company isn't making money on the hybrids it sells today, and it is looking at ways to "enhance revenue" from them." Not surprising, really, but an interesting admission nonetheless.
There are a few ways Ford could try and recoup some of its hybrid powertrain R&D costs, most logically being to extend the technology across its line and into more expensive products - possibly from Lincoln, mimicking the strategy Toyota uses with its Lexus division. In addition to hybrid and electric cars, Fields says Ford is also interested in diesels but isn't currently planning to sell any oil burners in passenger cars. Instead, Ford's diesel efforts are likely to continue focused on pickups.
Speaking of which, Ford's light duty diesel engine for the F-150 is apparently still somewhat on the agenda. Earlier reports, says Fields, that said the program had been canceled aren't entirely accurate. Instead, the smaller diesel was merely "delayed," though we have no idea for how long.

| Nissan reportedly readying Quest minivan and Infiniti QX56 replacements for next year September 4, 2009 at 3:29 pm |
| Filed under: Minivan/Van, SUV, Infiniti, Nissan Infiniti QX56 - Click above for high-res image gallery
Last we heard, Nissan was rumored to be dumping its Quest minivan along with the Armada large SUV and its platform-mate from Infiniti, the QX56. Conventional wisdom suggested that the Japanese automaker may source its next SUV platform from Dodge since the two automakers had planned to tie up on their next fullsize pickups.
As you probably know, the previously-announced relationship between Nissan and the Pentastar is no longer in the works. As such, if Nissan's going to put out another large SUV, it's going to need its own platform. Somewhat surprisingly given the overall state of the SUV market in America - sales of Infiniti's oversize 'ute are down 41.2 percent so far this year - Wards Auto is reporting that Nissan is indeed readying a new QX56 for next year.
Also in the offing will reportedly be a new generation of the largely unloved Quest minivan. If you thought the QX56 was underperforming in its market, the Quest is even worse - down 56.8 percent though August - and that's from a not-terribly-impressive baseline in a shrinking segment. Still, it seems Nissan wants to compete on equal footing against the Honda Odyssey and the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country twins, so we're interested to see what they come up with the next time 'round.

| Rendered Speculation: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee to underpin new Alfa Romeo SUV? September 4, 2009 at 3:01 pm |
| Filed under: SUV, Crossover, Jeep, Alfa Romeo Chrysler may not have a host of solid new products in the pipeline, but the upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee looks promising. With that in mind, it shouldn't come as a great surprise that the new bosses in Auburn Hills want to take advantage of the opportunity to get an Italian version of the upcoming sport-ute on the market. According to a report from Car and Driver that goes right along with whispers we've heard through the grapevine, the 2011 Grand Cherokee could provide its underpinnings to a new Alfa Romeo SUV, rumored to be (clumsily) dubbed the Cxover/A. While the Jeep has a rugged, go-anywhere image to uphold, the Alfa version would likely be more street-focused, taking aim at the likes of the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne. European restrictions would probably preclude the Hemi V8 from powering the Alfa, which, like the Grand Cherokee sold in Europe, would likely incorporate a range of diesel and gasoline V6 engines. As you can see from the rendering, adapting Alfa's curvaceous styling to the Grand Cherokee's classically rugged shape may prove a bit of a challenge, but we're eager to see the Italians give it a shot. | eBay Find of the Day: 1999 Vector M12 is still wedged in our inner twelve year-old minds September 4, 2009 at 2:28 pm |
| Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Auctions 1999 Vector M12 - click above image for hi-res gallery Wow. No, make that whoa. Why? More rumor and myth than car, this here is an honest to goodness Vector M12. And its yours for the taking. Unsure as to what you're about to bid on? Here's the explanation. To those of us that grew on on A-Team and Knight Rider, the Lamborghini Countach was the most positively exotic automobile ever. Forget about reality (and reliability, livability, etc.), our biggest hopes and dreams involved us in a black Countach with Paulina Porizkova and /or Kathy Ireland riding shotgun. Not that we would have known what to do with either the car or the girl, but hey - we were twelve. But there was a dark side. Vectors. They were like evil spirits. Something cooked up by the government in Area 51 using alien technology. And not just that regular old alien tech - we're talking the crazy stuff. You simply cannot imagine how impossibility AWESOME the Vector W2 was to a twelve-year-old mind. And you should have seen the jet fighter interior. It was like the space shuttle - the evil space shuttle. Then the W8 came out and it was still basically as nasty and mind bending. Then in the mid-Nineties, the M12 showed up, and well, the a little of the luster was lost. We've heard some abso-fab stories - guns, cocaine, barricading one's self inside a building for 30 days - about what was going on at Vector in 1995. Suffice to say there was a very ugly battle between founder Jerry Wiegert and an Indonesian company called Megatech that hostilely took Vector over and canned Wiegert. As a result, the M12 never got the 1,200 hp twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8 (or the Wiegertian top speed of 250 mph) that was planned for the never released WX-3. The M12 did however get the WX-3's aesthetics, although in reality it was nothing more than a Lamborghini Diablo with a goofy looking fiberglass body, terrible three-spoke wheels, the lowest rent interior possibly imaginable - and it weighed 3,600 pounds. But never mind all that - you're bidding on an genuine American-Italian hybrid supercar with a 490 hp 5.7-liter V12 that can hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 190 mph. And this one has 3.900 miles on it. Not shabby in the slightest. And remember, counting the four pre-production examples, Vector only made eighteen M12s. Unlike the common-as-a-housefly W8 (fifty built). Besides, you know your inner twelve-year-old will never be at peace without a Vector. Happy bidding. A big thank you to Davis for the tip! | Frankfurt Preview: Hyundai goes Blue (Drive) with ix Metro and i10 Electric September 4, 2009 at 1:59 pm |
| Filed under: Frankfurt Motor Show, Hyundai, Alternative Fuel Hyundai ix Metro - Click above for high-res image gallery We've already seen a mini-preview of the Hyundai ix35 that will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a few weeks, but we're arguably even more interested in the concept vehicles that the company is teasing today. The ix Metro and the i10 Electric will be in Germany to show off the Korean automaker's Blue Drive eco-efforts. The ix Metro, above, a gasoline-electric hybrid with C02 emissions of just 80 grams-per-kilometer will make its world debut at the IAA. The amazingly low emissions, especially for a CUV, are the result of a small, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with direct injection and turbocharging mated to a six-speed dual clutch transmission that works with an undescribed battery to move the vehicle. The i10 Electric (pictured after the jump and in gallery below) is a zero-emission version of the standard i10 city car that uses a 16 kWh battery and a 49kW motor for a 100-mile range. Using household 220V charging, the automaker says that the battery can be fully charged in five hours. Hyundai indicates that the BEV is production-ready and will go on sale in its home market in the second half of 2010. In addition, Hyundai will also bring the Elantra LPI HEV and Blue Will Plug-In Hybrid Electric, both previously displayed, to Frankfurt, as well as the Euro version of the redesigned Tucson called the ix35. We'll have more live from the show floor on September 15th. From looking at the photos released by Ford Racing, it looks like the updated CJ will get more than just new visual cues from the 2010 model Mustang. Under the hood lies a huge 3.4-liter Whipple supercharger that should be able to push quite a bit more air into the 5.4-liter V8 than the FRPP blower on the '09 version, and the interior looks even more race-oriented with the Liberty clutchless V-Gate style shifter and various gauges, buttons and toggles that adorn the instrument panel. We should have full details when the car makes its official debut at SEMA in November. Until then, enjoy a video of the 2010 Cobra Jet making a very loud and quick 1/4-mile pass after the jump. There are stories of people with monomaniacal vision, as well as the determination to see it through no matter what it takes. The tale of the guy who has little but his own will, who locks himself in a room, emerging years later with something that makes you go "Oh... wow..." He's the guy whose story breaks through the carapace of cynicism that accretes after years on the job and makes you say "I see!" In this case, the guy in question is Wael Rizk (pronounced wah-ell ri-zik), and the car you see above, the RA, is what emerged from his monomaniacal vision. He didn't exactly lock himself in a room, nor did he have only his will to go on, but we can let all that go - what he dreamed and built, and what we got to drive in Monterey, still has us going "Oh... wow..." | REPORT: BMW sues dead suspected fashion model killer September 4, 2009 at 12:29 pm |
| Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, BMW, Celebrities, Canada And you thought the story couldn't get more bizarre. Well, it turns out Ryan Jenkins, the now-deceased Canadian Realtor-turned-reality-TV-contestant-turned-accused-murderer may have allegedly tossed more than Jasmine Fiore in the dumpster. According to BMW, Jenkins hadn't made a payment on his leased 3 Series since March, and his account is now seriously past due. BMW is going after Ryan Jenkins for about $11,553 (US dollars) in outstanding payments on his '07 BMW 335xi sedan (his monthly lease payments were $844, proving he was about as successful in automobile purchasing negotiations as he was with relationships). While the vehicle in question has been returned to the automaker and since sold, the outstanding amount (plus interest) still needs to be collected. Regardless of BMW's next move, the line of creditors to this train wreck's estate is likely very long. | Toyota Prius importation under threat due to U.S. patent trade case? September 4, 2009 at 11:59 am |

With every new vehicle introduced by Toyota powered by the automaker's proprietary Hybrid Synergy Drive comes a matching complaint filed by Paice LLC for patent infringement. In the latest case, Paice has filed a grievance with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington alleging that Toyota is violating a patent it holds for powertrains that feature both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor - better known as hybrids.
This isn't the first time these two companies have grappled over hybrid drivetrain patents. Back in 2005, Paice won an initial judgement against Toyota resulting in an order that the automaker to pay Paice monetary damages of $4.3 million, though the judge rejected a request to force Toyota to halt sales of hybrid vehicles in the U.S. at that time. Later, Toyota was ordered to pay royalties equal to a small percentage of every hybrid sold in the States.
This time, Paice is taking a slightly different tack, seeking to get importations of Toyota's super popular Prius hybrid (along with all the rest of the hybrids from Toyota and Lexus) stopped by U.S. Customs right at the docks. According to Bloomberg, it could take about 15 months for the ITC to investigate this case, so there doesn't seem to be any reason to rush out and storm your local Toyota or Lexus dealer for a new hybrid... yet.

| GMC Acadia Denali arriving soon, confirmed on GM exec's Twitter feed September 4, 2009 at 11:30 am |
| Filed under: Crossover, GM, GMC 2010 GMC Acadia SLT - Click above for high-res image gallery Back when U.S. car shoppers actually purchased the GMC Yukon in big numbers, the division's Denali designation meant that you were getting the crème de la crème of large SUVs. One summer of $4 gas later, and we were getting the impression that the name would fade away with sales of the once popular SUV. If a sliver of news gleaned from Buick GMC Communications Group Manager Dayna Hart's Twitter feed is to believed, we're going to see another Denali, but the new one will differentiate the top-shelf Acadia crossover from its lesser brethren. The Tweet simply says "Denali version of Acadia approved and coming soon." If you head over to Hart's Twitter page, you'll have to scroll down a bit, just past news of her daughter's triathlon victory and just after some positive words about the GMC Terrain. Gotta love Twitter. Adding the Denali name to the Acadia makes perfect sense. The Denali name has brought affluent customers into GMC showrooms in the past, and if done right, a gussied up Acadia could bring those customers back for a second tour of duty. We just wonder why it took so long for General Motors to get around to this. [Source: Twitter]

| Honda updates Crosstour Facebook page with official response September 4, 2009 at 11:00 am |
| Filed under: Wagon, Marketing/Advertising, Crossover, Hatchback, Honda Honda Crosstour - click image above for high-res gallery Whoo boy! We would not want to be on the business end of the Honda whip this week. In case your head has been in the sand, Honda put up a Facebook page showing off their new Crosstour. General reaction was, to put it Orwellian terms, ungood. What's the problem with social media marketing if you're a corporation? You give up control of your message. As it turns out, sometimes you even give up internal control, too. Which is exactly what happened when Honda's light truck product planning manager Eddie Okubo posted a defense (or is that a defenestration?) of the much maligned new CUV without divulging the company he works for. Well, he got caught. In a novel/strange/unprecedented move, Honda has gone and posted a clarification on its Crosstour page - about everything. Here's the short version, all bullet pointy like: - The images that everyone thinks are the second coming of the Aztek are actually akin to bad yearbook photos. Put another way, the Crosstour is better looking that it looks.New photos will set you all straight.
- This isn't the European Accord wagon (as cool as Honda knows the Euro wagon to be) because it's an Americanized version of an American Accord wagon. i.e. bigger.
- This next part bears copying and pasting, "Many of you don't like the styling: It may not be for everyone." Though, Honda thinks among CUV buyers, the Crosstour will do well.
- Honda can't give out any more specs - sorry
- Finally, Eddie's comment wasn't removed because Honda was embarrassed by it. His comment was removed because he violated a policy concerning personal opinions on Facebook.
And there you have it -- the odd state of PR in the Facebook/Twitter age. Our thoughts? Defending a vehicle's design on Facebook isn't smart chess. Meaning that unless the comments are turned all the way off, you're just inviting buckets full of further negative comments. Don't say you know how "cool" a car that you don't sell here is and then not sell it here. If it's so cool, why can't we buy one? It's probably best to provide more than two photographs, especially two that you admit are ungood. Assuming a Crosstour Facebook page could be a good idea, people need more to chew on. Finally, poor Eddie. Full response from Honda after the jump. Thanks to everyone for the tips! | GM's Docherty says 'No' to Pontiac G8-based Buick Grand National, promises two more sedans September 4, 2009 at 10:29 am |
| Filed under: Car Buying, Etc., Marketing/Advertising, Buick, GMC Susan Docherty, General Manager of Buick and GMC, recently made some time available for a General Motors Fastlane blog webchat to discuss the futures of her brands. Stating plainly that "every new product we launch must be a home run. No second chances," indicates that at least some GM employees realize that the automaker is not going to coast through this latest crisis of consumer confidence. The stakes are make-or-break for the company, and initial feedback from the new LaCrosse has been very positive, but Buick can't survive with a lone great product. Chat participants lobbed questions about what's coming, and the answers reveal a hopeful, and hopefully well-executed, future. Firstly, as great a car as it is, the Pontiac G8 is not going to slide over to Buick as a Grand National or something else. While Docherty herself cited the GN as one of her favorite Buicks ever, Pontiac is clearly in hospice, clutching a DNR. What will be coming are two new sedans - both junior to the LaCrosse - which will eventually top the sedan line at the Tri-Shield. One of the new sedans will be a compact, likely based on the new Opel Astra, while the other is headed for midsize waters, probably as the Regal. Perhaps more exciting for those wishing to see a sportier Buick, intimations that a Riviera coupe may show up. "It would be a nice addition" says Docherty, though it's doubtlessly more important for GM to get its bread-and-butter squared away without getting distracted by a spicier coupe and its almost certainly smaller sales projections. Still, a Camaro-underpinned two-door Buick with classically gorgeous styling would certainly generate attention, wouldn't it? Ah, we can dream... | Audi U.S. president Johan de Nysschen addresses Chevrolet Volt is for idiots firestorm via Facebook September 4, 2009 at 9:58 am |
| Filed under: Etc., Technology, Audi, Alternative Fuel, Diesel
Audi of America president Johan de Nysschen has issued a public response to the firestorm he created yesterday when he reportedly told a member of the media that the Chevrolet Volt is "a car for idiots." Anyone who has met de Nysschen in person knows he is not one to mince words. He (and Audi) has been a strong proponent of diesel technology as an important near-to-mid-term method to reduce petroleum consumption, but given that Audi is planning electric vehicles of their own - at least in concept form - the remark caught many offguard. In his new statement released on Audi's Facebook page, de Nysschen declares that he doesn't specifically remember using the words attributed to him, although he doesn't deny the sentiment behind them. Essentially, he, along with many others, is highly dubious of the viability of General Motors' ER-EV concept, particularly from an economic standpoint. de Nysschen also highlights the fact that government policies are one of the driving forces behind electrification. While noting that in the long-term, electrified propulsion systems will be a major part of the transportation system, he points out that many questions remain unresolved including the readiness of the power grid and generation systems to support large quantities of EVs.
Just as de Nysschen questions these elements, many will make precisely the opposite argument. The reality is likely to fall somewhere in between, with a number of these technologies playing an important part for the foreseeable future. The grid is probably more ready than most doubters think, but the time frame for driving down the cost of batteries may not be so easy to tackle. Increasingly efficient internal combustion engines will be critical, especially for long distance travel. While history sorts out what technologies will be winners over the long haul, you can read de Nysschen's statement right now after the jump. What do you think? | Asian Le Mans Series attracts 23 entries for opening race at Okayama September 4, 2009 at 9:29 am |
| Filed under: Motorsports, Japan Remember when Le Mans was the name of a town in France and the race that took place there? International endurance racing has come a long way since then - the headline race has branched out into the European Le Mans Series (LMS) and the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), and race organizers ACO are now preparing for the start of the inaugural Asian Le Mans Series. Like the European series - but unlike ALMS which is supervised by IMSA - the Asian LMS is being operated directly by the Automobile Club de L'Ouest (ACO), the century-old group responsible for the 24 Hours of Le Mans since its inception. Taking the place of the defunct Japan Le Mans Challenge, the Asian Le Mans Series is set to kick off at the end of October with the 1000km of Okayama at the circuit that hosted the Pacific Grand Prix in 1994 and 1995. Race organizers have done their best to attract both local entries as well as established teams from the American and European championships, and they have brought in some big guns: Aston Martin will be there in the top LMP1 category along with a pair of private entry Audi R10s and a few privateer Orecas and Judds. A few Porsches, Astons, Lambos, Saleens and Ferraris are set to round out the lower classes, including Rahal Letterman's BMW M3 GT2, fresh from their double class victory at Road Atlanta. All in all, 23 entries have been confirmed for the inaugural event, which will include two races in support of the World Touring Car Championship round the same weekend.
So far, the Okayama event is the only race on the calendar, but winners from each of the four categories will qualify for automatic entry at the title event in France next year. Follow the jump for more information in the press release. | REPORT: Chrysler backs away from BBDO, to hold casting call for Q4 advertising agencies September 4, 2009 at 9:00 am |
| Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Chrysler, Fiat Now that the Cash-for-Clunkers bonanza is over, Chrysler will likely struggle to hold on to their market share, and in the company's post-bankruptcy landscape, the Pentastar is looking at every angle possible to improve their sales figures. New Chrysler ad chief Michael Accavitti and staff are said to be looking for more creativity in their fourth quarter marketing push, and its chief advertising agency could be left twisting in the wind.
Automotive News is reporting that Chrysler is opening up competition for its Q4 ad push, with several agencies being offered the opportunity to pitch a new campaign. The move could be coming in part because of feedback from global partner Fiat, which is banking on a turnaround of its five star pet project.
BBDO has been Chrysler's main ad company since 2000, when the contract was valued at $2.4 billion. BBDO had a staff of 2,000 back then, compared with the 500 workers it has now. Chrysler's longtime ad agency, whose contract with the Pentastar ends in January, will reportedly still get a chance to pitch a campaign idea.
